Community Engagement Profile:
- Imperial Valley Food Bank (IVFB) is located in Imperial County which covers over 4,597 square miles bordering on Mexico to the South, Riverside County to the North, San Diego County on the West and State of Arizona on the East. Over 30% of the children in Imperial County are living in economically struggling families. For many of these children the free and reduced National School Lunch Program is an essential part of their nutritional well-being. But in the summer months these children were going without this all important meal due to the lack of summer lunch sponsorship and sites throughout this rural county.
- A small rural non-profit organization, IVFB helps to limit the extent of poverty and hunger in the county by feeding close to 10,000 families per month through the Emergency Food Assistance Program (EFAP) and its member agencies.
- In 2005 IVFB was so concerned about the gaps in feeding Imperial County’s needy children during the summer months that they initiated an outreach effort to educate the community and bring public and private partnerships together to address the need.
